Automatic Gearbox Types: A Reliability Guide

Torque Converter (Traditional Auto)

Reliability: Excellent. The most proven technology. Used by Toyota (all hybrids), most BMWs, Mercedes, and many Kias/Hyundais. Smooth, reliable, and easy to service.

CVT (Continuously Variable)

Reliability: Good. Used by Nissan (Qashqai, Juke), Honda, and some Toyotas. Generally reliable but can feel odd to drive. Avoid high-mileage Nissan CVTs.

Dual-Clutch (DSG/Powershift/EDC)

Reliability: Poor to Fair. Used by VW Group (DSG), Ford (Powershift), Renault (EDC), and Hyundai/Kia (DCT). Fast shifts but prone to clutch wear, judder, and mechatronics failure. Budget £800-£2,000 for clutch pack replacement.

Automated Manual (AMT)

Reliability: Fair. Used by Fiat (Dualogic), Vauxhall (Easytronic). Cheap to buy but jerky to drive and prone to actuator failures.

Which Automatics to Avoid

  1. Ford Powershift (Focus Mk3, Fiesta) — clutch shudder and judder are extremely common
  2. VW DSG (wet clutch, DQ250) — the 6-speed wet clutch DSG is better than the 7-speed dry clutch
  3. Early Hyundai/Kia DCT — improved in newer models but early versions were troublesome
  4. Fiat Dualogic — cheap but unreliable automated manual
  5. Renault EDC — dual-clutch with a patchy reliability record

The Safe Choice

If you want a reliable automatic, look for:

  • Toyota hybrid — CVT that's been proven over millions of miles
  • BMW/Mercedes torque converter — traditional auto, well-engineered
  • Kia/Hyundai torque converter — newer models with conventional autos are excellent
