Dual Clutch Gearbox Problems: Ford, VW, Hyundai & More

Dual-clutch gearboxes promise the best of both worlds: automatic convenience with manual efficiency. But they're also the source of some of the most expensive used car repairs.

Dual-Clutch Gearbox Types

VW DSG

  • DQ200 (7-speed dry clutch) — the problematic one. Clutch wear, mechatronics failure, judder. Found in 1.2/1.4 TSI engines. Budget £1,200-£1,800 for clutch replacement.
  • DQ250 (6-speed wet clutch) — much more reliable. Found in 2.0 TDI engines. Still needs fluid changes.
  • DQ381 (7-speed wet clutch) — newer and improved. Generally reliable.

Ford Powershift

Ford's dual-clutch was fitted to the Focus Mk3 and Fiesta. Known for shudder, judder, and rough low-speed shifts. Ford acknowledged the issue but never fully resolved it. Budget £900-£1,800 for clutch pack replacement.

Hyundai/Kia DCT

The 7-speed dry clutch DCT in pre-2020 models was troublesome. Newer wet-clutch versions are much better. If buying used, check for hesitation from standstill and judder at low speeds.

Renault EDC

Renault's dual-clutch (found in Clio, Captur) has a mixed record. Some are fine, others need clutch replacement before 60,000 miles.

Symptoms of a Failing Dual-Clutch

  1. Judder/shudder from standstill — the clutch is slipping
  2. Hesitation when pulling away — delayed engagement
  3. Rough shifts at low speeds — the clutch packs are wearing
  4. Warning light — gearbox fault codes
  5. Loss of drive — in extreme cases, the gearbox goes into limp mode

The Alternative

If you want an automatic without the risk:

  • Torque converter (traditional auto) — BMW, Mercedes, Kia Sportage, Toyota
  • CVT — Nissan, Honda, Toyota hybrids
  • Manual — always the most reliable option
