The Good News

French cars have improved significantly. Modern Renaults, Peugeots, and Citroens are better built than their predecessors. The Peugeot 3008 Mk2 (0.84) prove that French engineering can compete with the best.

Service costs are generally lower than German equivalents, and parts are widely available in the UK.

The Bad News

French cars still suffer from:

  • Electrical gremlins — more sensor and wiring faults than Japanese equivalents
  • Turbo problems — the small turbocharged engines (TCe, PureTech) can have issues
  • Higher depreciation — French cars lose value faster, which means cheaper to buy but more to lose
  • PureTech engine issues — Peugeot/Citroen's 1.2 PureTech has a known timing chain problem on pre-2019 models

Should You Buy a French Car?

If the price is right, absolutely. French cars are often the cheapest way into a well-equipped, comfortable car. Just:

  1. Budget for slightly higher repair frequency than Japanese alternatives
  2. Avoid the early 1.2 PureTech engines (timing chain issue)
  3. Check the electrical systems thoroughly on any test drive
  4. Run a simulation to see expected costs
