Are Volkswagens Reliable? What UK Data Shows

Volkswagen sits in an interesting position — not quite premium, not quite mainstream. But are they reliable? With a brand average of 0.88, VW is about average for the UK market.

The DSG Question

The DSG dual-clutch gearbox is VW's most divisive feature. The 7-speed dry clutch (DQ200) found in smaller engines has a patchy record — clutch wear, mechatronics failure, and judder are known issues. Budget £1,200-£1,800 for a rebuild.

The 6-speed wet clutch (DQ250) in 2.0 TDI models is significantly more reliable.

Our advice: if buying automatic, stick to the 6-speed DSG or go for a manual.

VW vs The Competition

The UP (0.92) is VW's most reliable model — but it still doesn't match the Toyota Yaris or Honda Jazz. VW's strength is build quality and refinement, not outright reliability.

Compared to Ford, VW cars cost more to buy, more to service, and more to repair. They're better built and hold value longer, but the total cost of ownership is higher.

Should You Buy a VW?

VW makes good cars. They're well-built, refined, and hold their value. Just go in knowing:

  1. Service costs are higher than Ford, Vauxhall, or Korean alternatives
  2. Avoid the 7-speed dry clutch DSG if possible
  3. The 2.0 TDI is a proven, reliable engine
  4. Run a simulation to see what repairs to expect
