Vauxhall Corsa Buyers Guide: The UK's Most Popular Used Car Analysed

The Vauxhall Corsa is the UK's most popular used car. There are thousands for sale at any time, from £500 first-car specials to £8,000 nearly-new models. But "popular" doesn't mean "reliable."

We analysed two generations of Corsa using MOT failure data and real repair costs.

Is the Vauxhall Corsa Reliable?

Short answer: it's average. Not terrible, not great. The Corsa D (2006-2014) has a reliability factor of 0.88 and the Corsa E (2014-2019) scores 0.85. Both are below the 1.0 average, meaning they fail slightly more often than the typical car.

For comparison, a Toyota Yaris scores 1.10 and a Honda Jazz scores 1.08.

Vauxhall Corsa D (2006-2014)

The Corsa D is the classic first car and city runabout. Cheap to buy, cheap to insure, easy to drive. But it has its weak points.

Common faults:

Best Corsa D to buy

The 1.2 16v is the sweet spot — cheap to insure, reliable enough, and parts are everywhere. Avoid the 1.0 12v if you ever drive on motorways (it's painfully slow) and the 1.3 CDTi diesel (turbo and EGR problems at high mileage).

Vauxhall Corsa E (2014-2019)

Typical price: £4.7k-£5.6k Insurance group: 8 MPG: 48 Annual service: £230

The Corsa E improved on the D in most areas — better interior, more refined, slightly more reliable.

Common faults:

  • Turbo (1.0T) — Turbo failure on 1.0 turbo (£700-£1.3k)
  • Coil springs — Coil spring fracture (corrosion-related) (£100-£200)
  • Ball joints — Ball joint wear causing play in suspension (£80-£180)
  • Timing chain (1.0T) — Timing chain stretch on 1.0 turbo (£600-£1.1k)
  • Thermostat — Thermostat failure causing overheating (£80-£160)

Best Corsa E to buy

The 1.4 16v is the all-rounder. The 1.0T ecoFLEX is great on fuel but can have turbo issues. Avoid high-mileage 1.3 CDTi diesels.

The Toyota Yaris beats the Corsa on reliability every time. The Ford Fiesta is more fun to drive. But the Corsa is usually the cheapest to buy and insure — which is why it sells.
